General Overview of Responsibilities
The Journeyman Carpenter performs high-end rough and finish carpentry on residential and light commercial projects, including custom homes, remodels, additions, and tenant improvements. Working under the direction of the Project Supervisor, this role is responsible for executing framing, exterior, and finish carpentry with a high level of craftsmanship while maintaining safe work practices, efficient use of materials, and professional conduct on job sites. Journeyman Carpenters are expected to work independently and as a team member, working with others and often overseeing Apprentices as needed to complete daily tasks.
Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum 4+ years carpentry experience, preferably in residential construction
- Proven experience performing high-end rough and finish carpentry
- Strong knowledge of framing, siding, exterior trim, and finish carpentry
- Ability to read construction drawings and perform layout independently
- Experience working on custom homes, remodels, and additions preferred
- Working knowledge of CAL OSHA safety requirements and job site safety practices
- Journeyman carpenters are expected to provide their own hand tools appropriate for the trade
- Valid California driver’s license and reliable transportation
Core Responsibilities
- Perform high-end rough carpentry including layout and framing for walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, beams, and structural components
- Perform high-end finish carpentry including trim, doors, windows, cabinetry details, and other architectural finish elements
- Read and interpret construction drawings to ensure accurate layout and installation
- Lay out and construct wall systems including studs, plates, headers, and structural framing components
- Install floor framing systems including joists, beams, and subflooring
- Frame roof systems including rafters, trusses, blocking, and roof sheathing
- Install structural and exterior sheathing and ensure proper fastening patterns
- Install exterior doors and windows ensuring proper flashing, sealing, and alignment
- Install building weather barriers, flashing systems, and moisture protection components
- Install exterior siding systems including trim, corner boards, and related exterior carpentry elements
- Construct decks, exterior stairs, and other exterior framing components when required
- Maintain tight tolerances and high-quality workmanship consistent with custom residential construction
- Maintain full knowledge of CAL OSHA safety requirements and adhere to all safety protocols on the job site
- Use materials in cost-effective and efficient ways to minimize waste and support project budgets
- Prepare work areas and carpentry work for required inspections
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized job sites
- Communicate material needs, project progress, or field issues to the Project Supervisor
Customer Service & Job Site Standards
- Maintain a professional demeanor and respectful communication when working around clients or occupants
- Protect customer property at all times including floors, finishes, landscaping, and furnishings
- Use dust barriers, drop cloths, and other protection methods when appropriate to minimize disruption and protect finished spaces

- Work independently and efficiently while maintaining project schedules
- Maintain safe, clean, and organized job sites
- Communicate professionally with supervisors, coworkers, subcontractors, and clients

- Support apprentices and help maintain a positive, productive job site environment
Physical Requirements
- Lift and carry materials weighing up to 80 pounds on a regular basis
- Work at heights using ladders and scaffolding
- Stand, bend, climb, and perform physical labor throughout the workday
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to see, hear, and communicate effectively in order to maintain awareness of jobsite hazards and follow safety procedures

Work Hours: Monday through Friday | 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (Overtime as needed)
